Chapter 10

Emerson

I gasp, shooting up in bed, shaking. My skin is covered in a thin sheen of sweat, and my eyes dart around my room when I hear my door close. I didn’t see who was in here, but I’m assuming it was Harlow. She’s the only one who would come in here, Haley probably doesn’t even remember that I live here. I’ve been having the same nightmare off and on since that guy broke into our house and I don’t know how to shake it. I guess it’s because in my mind Rhett and Grey are indestructible, and the fact that someone had the means to not only break into our house, but almost successfully take me with him, has been unsettling to say the least.

I French braid my hair into two loose plaits and grab some clothes to throw on. I have no idea what today will bring, but I fully intend on going to the Ravens bonfire tonight so I’m sure I’ll have to battle the big boss all the way up to when I leave. I’m happy to see that Kristina isn’t in the kitchen and I pour myself a tall glass of chocolate milk. The house is super quiet, and I realize that I’ve slept in later than I normally do, usually I’m the first one up. But I think the weight Rhett lifted off of me by saying I can stay here for the foreseeable future allowed me to fall asleep with one less worry.

Movement catches my eye as I glance out the bay windows overlooking the expansive back deck. I smile over the rim of my glass when I see Rhett carrying large chunks of wood over to the chopping block. He never takes any downtime and I realize that even though he’s not at work today, he’s going to spend it getting ready for the winter. I can’t complain, in all the years I’ve lived under this man’s roof, we’ve always been prepared. Every single winter we’ve had plenty of food and several backups in case the electricity goes out. I toss my glass into the sink and rush outside to help. That’s one perk of living with two cavemen. They don’t notice things like dirty dishes in the sink. I’m surprised at how warm it is when I get outside and quickly toss my hoodie over the railing and beeline down the stone stairs in the side of the yard and down to Rhett. I scan the yard for any sign of Grey because I’m wearing a bikini top instead of the head-to-toe hazmat suit he’d like me swaddled in day and night.

“Need some help?” I call, causing Rhett to look up from where he’s eyeing the freshly cut wood. His hands are on his hips, and he looks aggravated, more so than usual. There’s no telling if it's Kristina, Harlow or Grey related, but I’m certain I’m not one of his annoyances today. “I’m stronger than I look,” I tell him playfully.
